So why is the Whole Foods toothpaste aisle a mess right now?

Because two of the biggest “natural” brands on that shelf — Tom’s of Maine and Davids Natural Toothpaste — are in the middle of active class action lawsuits over heavy metal contamination and manufacturing safety. I’m not making this up and I’m not exaggerating.

Tom’s of Maine — the FDA warning + the lead findings

Tom’s of Maine is owned by Colgate-Palmolive. Which is a whole separate conversation about parent companies and clean-brand acquisitions. But the short version: I don’t buy Tom’s anymore. Neither should you.

Davids — the PFAS case got dropped, but the lead case is real

Okay, this one deserves nuance because the internet is bad at nuance. A 2024 lawsuit accused Davids of undisclosed PFAS in its toothpaste. That case got dismissed with prejudice in July 2025 after the testing lab retracted its results. That case is over. So please stop citing it.

But a separate, active complaint — Reilly v.
