About Fair Marrow

An editorial on what is actually clean, what is just marketed that way, and the difference between the two.

Erin Siemek — Founder & Lead Reviewer

Most “nontoxic” roundups are written by generalists who copy ingredient lists from brand PR kits and call it research. Fair Marrow is not that site.

This is a review publication run by a marketing professional who has spent 10+ years inside the wellness, skincare, supplement, and CPG industries — and who has seen greenwashing engineered from the inside. We know what a “clean” claim costs to print on a label. We know which certifications mean something and which ones are purchased. We know how a formulation brief gets rewritten after a toxicology review, and we know when brands quietly reformulate without telling their customers.

That background shapes everything we publish.

We are not here to scare you. We are here to give you the same information a formulation consultant would use — in plain language, without the fear-based framing and without the aspirational lifestyle packaging.

Why Fair Marrow

The name is not decorative.

“Fair” means what it sounds like: honest, equitable, not for sale. A fair read means we apply the same standard to every product — a $12 drugstore serum gets the same ingredient screen as an $85 “clean” formula from a wellness brand you’ve seen all over your feed. No brand gets a pass because the aesthetic is right or the founder’s story is good.

“Marrow” is the deep interior — the core of a thing. Not the label. Not the packaging. Not the marketing brief. What is actually inside. Bone marrow is where blood is made. It is the origin point, the real material. That is the layer we are interested in: what is actually in the formula, what the evidence actually says, what the certification actually audits.

Together: a fair read on what is actually inside. That is the editorial north star of every piece we publish.

Why This Site Exists

The nontoxic product space has a content problem.

  • Generic listicles rank without naming a single qualified expert.
  • Fear-coded content exaggerates risk to drive clicks without citing mechanisms.
  • Pay-to-rate directories charge brands for positive placement without disclosing it.
  • Aspirational lifestyle publishing sells an aesthetic, not ingredient transparency.
  • Female-coded wellness media treats “clean living” as a niche for one demographic, when the evidence for reducing synthetic chemical exposure applies to every body.

We built Fair Marrow to fill a specific gap: ingredient-focused, evidence-grounded, gender-neutral product evaluation — for people who read labels the same way we do.

Who We Write For

You do not need to identify as a “wellness person” to belong here.

Our readers include:

  • People who care about what they put on and in their bodies but are tired of vague “natural” marketing
  • Men who want honest grooming and supplement reviews without being sold “extreme performance” marketing
  • Label-readers who want actual INCI breakdowns, not aesthetic roundups
  • Founders and formulators building better-for-you products who want a fair, independent perspective
  • Anyone who wants to lower their synthetic chemical load incrementally — without becoming anxious about it

Fair Marrow is gender-neutral by design. We cover men’s grooming, women’s skincare, and unisex household and supplement categories with identical editorial standards.

Editorial Standards

What “Nontoxic” Means Here

We do not use “nontoxic” as a marketing synonym for “natural.” We use it as a working standard based on:

  1. Absence of ingredients with established harm signals — carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxicants, and sensitizers flagged by EWG, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, the EU Cosmetics Regulation banned/restricted list, or peer-reviewed literature
  2. Formulation transparency — brands that disclose full ingredient lists, including fragrance components and processing aids, are weighted more favorably
  3. Dose-context honesty — we acknowledge when risk is exposure-dependent and do not treat trace-level detections as equivalent to chronic high-dose exposure
  4. Certification relevance — we note which third-party certifications apply to a given claim and whether those certifications are audited or self-declared

We do not define “nontoxic” as “zero synthetic ingredients.” Some synthetic compounds are well-characterized, low-risk, and function better than available natural alternatives. We evaluate both.

The Fair Marrow Standard

Every product we evaluate goes through the same four-step process: ingredient screening, real-use testing, formulation context, and ongoing review. We call this the Fair Marrow Standard — not because the name is catchy, but because having a consistent rubric is what makes comparisons meaningful. A product either clears the bar or it does not. The bar does not move for good branding.

Our Refusal-to-Greenwash Policy

We do not:

  • Publish “green” claims without ingredient-level substantiation
  • Count marketing certifications as evidence of safety
  • Treat “made with natural ingredients” as equivalent to a complete formulation review
  • Accept brand-provided safety studies as independent evidence without independent corroboration
  • Use fear-based language to manufacture urgency around low-evidence risks

We do:

  • Cite specific ingredients by INCI name
  • Cross-reference flagged ingredients against multiple databases and their underlying data sources
  • Note when risk evidence is strong, preliminary, or contested
  • Correct published reviews when new evidence warrants it and document corrections at the bottom of the affected page

Editorial Independence Statement

We do not offer:

If a brand we have negatively reviewed begins advertising on this site, the review does not change.

How We Evaluate Products

Step 1 — Ingredient Screening

Every product we review receives a full INCI list review before any physical testing. We cross-reference ingredients against:

  • EWG Skin Deep Database — for flagged ingredients and scoring context (noted with the caveat that EWG scores are hazard-based, not exposure-based)
  • Think Dirty App Database — secondary cross-reference
  • EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex II / Annex III — the EU’s prohibited and restricted ingredient lists, which are more comprehensive than current U.S. FDA cosmetic regulation
  • INCI Decoder — for function, mechanism, and common formulation context
  • PubMed / peer-reviewed literature — for ingredients with contested or evolving evidence
  • California Prop 65 list — for relevant chemical exposure context

We note database scores but do not treat any single database score as a final verdict. We explain why.

Step 2 — Real-Use Evaluation

Products that pass initial ingredient screening are tested in real conditions — not controlled lab settings. We evaluate:

  • Texture, application, and sensory experience
  • Performance over multi-week testing windows
  • Skin response (irritation, sensitivity, breakout incidence)
  • Packaging integrity (airtight, UV-protective, recyclable where claimed)
  • Label accuracy (does the product match what the brand claims on the label?)

Step 3 — Formulation Context

Where possible, we seek input from:

  • Independent cosmetic chemists and formulators
  • Registered dietitians and nutritionists (for supplement reviews)
  • Brand founders willing to walk through formulation decisions on the record

Founder interviews are noted in the review. We do not accept formulation talking points as independent verification.

Step 4 — Ongoing Review

Published reviews are treated as living documents. We update ratings and content when:

  • A product is reformulated
  • New safety data emerges for a key ingredient
  • Reader or contributor feedback surfaces a factual error

Every update is timestamped and documented at the bottom of the page.

Mission Statement

Fair Marrow exists to give ingredient-literate adults — regardless of gender, age, or wellness identity — the same quality of formulation analysis that insiders use, in a format that is readable without a chemistry degree.

We believe that reducing synthetic chemical exposure should be approachable, evidence-grounded, and free from the fear-based and aspirational framing that dominates this category. We believe “clean” should be a verifiable standard, not a marketing aesthetic.

We are ingredient-skeptics who read labels for a living. Fair Marrow is what we built for ourselves — and for everyone who reads labels the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your product ratings influenced by affiliate relationships?

No. Affiliate links are added after editorial decisions are made, not before. A product’s inclusion in a review or roundup is determined by ingredient screening and real-use evaluation results. We earn commissions on some purchases made through our links, and that relationship is disclosed on every page that contains affiliate links.

How is Fair Marrow different from EWG Skin Deep?

EWG scores ingredients based on hazard data — meaning the potential harm of a substance under certain conditions — not the actual exposure levels in a given product. We use EWG as one reference among several, but we contextualize scores with dose and exposure data and note where EWG flags diverge from peer-reviewed consensus. We are more interested in “how much of this is in the product and at what exposure level” than in hazard scores in isolation.

Do you cover products for men specifically?

Yes. Men’s grooming, supplements marketed to men, and household products used across gender lines are reviewed under the same ingredient standards as any other product. We do not use gender as an editorial filter. Ingredient safety is not gendered.

What certifications do you consider meaningful?

Certifications we treat as substantive include USDA Organic, NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, GOTS (textiles), OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and EWG Verified — each with defined third-party audit requirements. Certifications we treat with more skepticism include self-declared “clean” or “natural” labels, brand-created seals without external audits, and certifications that charge fees without conducting ingredient-level reviews.

Can I submit a product for review?

Yes. We accept submissions from brands and founders through our brand submission form. Submission does not guarantee a review or a positive outcome. All products are evaluated against the same ingredient screening criteria regardless of how they were sourced.
