How We Tested

Best Nano-Hydroxyapatite Transparency: Boka Ela Mint
Boka uses nano-hydroxyapatite, the smaller-particle variant of HAp. The nano question matters because particle size changes how the body processes the material, and the EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety reviews n-HAp safety separately from non-nano HAp.

The formula is ADA-accepted, which means the American Dental Association has reviewed the cavity-prevention and gingivitis claims and confirmed the evidence supports them. The pillar it weakens on is some additional ingredients. Hello uses erythritol as a sweetener and includes coconut oil, both of which are clean but add formula complexity that David’s avoids.

Yes With One Caveat: Dr. Bronner’s All-One Toothpaste
Dr. Bronner’s is the cleanest INCI on the list. USDA Organic, fair-trade certified, made in the USA. Six ingredients: organic coconut oil, organic peppermint oil, baking soda, organic stevia, organic menthol crystals, organic essential oils. No SLS, no fluoride, no preservatives, no thickeners.
The pillar it nails is Materials. The pillar it weakens on is remineralization. There is no hydroxyapatite and no fluoride. The formula relies entirely on baking soda’s mechanical cleaning and the essential oils’ antimicrobial properties. So this is a clean toothpaste with no active cavity-prevention agent, which is fine for low-cavity-risk users and not fine for high-cavity-risk users.

What We Cut and Why
Tom’s of Maine: contains carrageenan in most variants. Carrageenan is debated in the published literature for gut microbiome effects, and a clean toothpaste does not need it. Owned by Colgate-Palmolive since 2006.
Crest Pro-Health: contains SLS in most variants and stannous fluoride with stabilizers. The fluoride evidence base is strong, but the SLS irritation profile is well-documented.
Native Toothpaste: SLS-free, but contains microcrystalline cellulose and a fragrance compound that is not fully broken down on the label. Acquired by Procter and Gamble in 2017.
