Is HexClad Actually Non-Toxic? An Honest Review

Is HexClad non-toxic cookware or premium marketing — the full materials audit, from PTFE claims to the $2.5 million settlement.
Is HexClad non-toxic? That’s the question on the box, on the website, and in every Gordon Ramsay ad you’ve ever skipped. Four things matter when you ask that about a pan: the coating composition, how it behaves at heat, the manufacturing reality behind the brand’s claims, and what happens when those claims get tested in a courtroom. HexClad has a complicated answer to all four. So I went looking for the SDS, pulled the lawsuit records, and read every FAQ they’ve published. Here’s exactly what the marketing won’t tell you.
What HexClad Says About Itself
HexClad calls its cookware “hybrid.” The pitch is simple: laser-etched stainless steel hexagons sit on top, a non-stick coating fills the recessed valleys in between. You get the sear of stainless and the release of non-stick in one pan. It’s a real engineering idea. The company has sold it well.
On the material side, HexClad’s FAQ now states: “Our cookware products use our proprietary HEXCLAD TerraBond™ ceramic nonstick coating, which is PTFE-free and PFAS-free.” (HexClad FAQ). That’s a clean claim. It’s also a new one.
Until 2024, HexClad marketed a different version of those same pans as “non-toxic,” “PFAS Free,” and “PFOA Free.” The coating filling those hexagonal recesses was PTFE — the synthetic fluoropolymer found in Teflon. That’s not a rumor. HexClad acknowledged it in private Facebook messages surfaced during litigation, according to KnowYourCookware. And PTFE, under California’s regulatory definitions, is a PFAS.
So the brand has two timelines. Before 2024: PTFE coating, “non-toxic” claims, lawsuit. After 2024: TerraBond ceramic, new “PTFE-free and PFAS-free” claims, no independent testing yet. That split matters a lot depending on which pans are already in your kitchen.
The Materials Audit: What’s Actually in the Pan
The Tri-Ply Body
The structural build of HexClad pans is not the problem. The body is tri-ply — aluminum sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel. Aluminum cores are standard in high-end cookware, and the stainless steel cladding keeps the aluminum away from food contact. No real flags here. The hexagonal pattern is laser-etched, not coated on top. That part is bare stainless.
The Old Coating: PTFE
This is the one that built the company and then became the lawsuit. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is the same compound behind Teflon. It’s durable, slick, and considered stable at normal cooking temperatures. The debate is what happens above 500°F — at that point, PTFE can begin to degrade and release fumes. The Environmental Blog’s chemistry breakdown notes that PTFE-coated pans are generally considered safe when used properly, but the “safe” window closes fast if you preheat a dry pan or run it on high for an extended time.
The bigger issue wasn’t the chemistry. It was the label. HexClad marketed pans with PTFE as “PFAS-free.” Under the broadest and most current definitions of PFAS — which include all fluoropolymers — PTFE is a PFAS. HexClad’s marketing said otherwise. A class action disagreed.
The New Coating: TerraBond Ceramic
HexClad’s current lineup uses TerraBond, described as a “proprietary ceramic nonstick coating” that is PTFE-free and PFAS-free. Ceramic non-stick coatings are typically sol-gel silica-based — a silica matrix that provides release without fluoropolymers. That’s the Tier 2 category here at Fair Marrow: better than mainstream PTFE, not as inert as bare stainless.
But here’s where it gets weird. HexClad has not published a Safety Data Sheet for TerraBond. There are no third-party lab reports on the brand’s own website. The only testing data available is from a manufacturer-commissioned study through Light Labs, which returned non-detect for PFAS, per KnowYourCookware’s investigation. Manufacturer-paid testing is not worthless. But it is not the same as independently commissioned third-party testing posted publicly. Caraway, Our Place, and Made In CeramiClad have all published independent test results. HexClad has not.
One more wrinkle: the legacy PTFE pans are still being sold alongside the new TerraBond line. The packaging looks similar. A Reddit thread from late 2024 describes consumers buying Costco sets, contacting HexClad directly, and still not being able to confirm which version they received. HexClad has not made batch identification simple.
Durability — The Other Safety Question
A coating that wears and flakes is a safety concern regardless of what’s in it. Reddit’s cookware communities have documented consistent coating degradation in HexClad pans within six to twelve months of regular use. One r/Costco thread describes a set that began peeling after six months of light use. Others note that the non-stick release failed well before visible damage appeared.
The consensus across these communities: HexClad pans perform well early, then degrade faster than their lifetime warranty suggests they should. And when a non-stick coating starts to go, the question of what’s in it becomes more urgent, not less.
The SDS and Manufacturing Reality
I went looking for the SDS and came up empty. HexClad does not publish a Safety Data Sheet for the TerraBond coating. Their FAQ lists no SDS link. No SDS appears in public databases searched for this review. Consumer cookware brands are not required to publish SDS documents the way industrial chemical manufacturers are. But the absence means there is no public document auditing the coating’s full ingredient list, hazard profile, or safe handling limits.
HexClad is manufactured in China. The company is based in Los Angeles, operated by One Source to Market, LLC. There are no public records of recalls on HexClad products through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission as of the time of this writing.
The independent testing picture is thin. A November 2025 Cook Culture study using ISO 17025-accredited Light Labs methodology found no detectable PFAS in tested cookware samples. One HexClad pan in that study returned a lead value slightly above the 1 ppb benchmark — but the lab noted the result may have been influenced by the lid being tested alongside the pan, per FDA protocol. The lab recommended retesting without the lid. That retesting has not been published.
And the key problem with the TerraBond line is the same one that tripped HexClad before: the brand makes strong claims it has not yet backed with transparent, reproducible, independent data. “PTFE-free and PFAS-free” was on the old pans, too. LeafScore’s review puts it plainly: until third-party testing is published, they won’t rate the pans at all.
The Fair Marrow Standard Rating
The Fair Marrow Standard uses three tiers to rate cookware and home products on material safety.
- Tier 1 — Inert: bare stainless steel, cast iron, true ceramic, glass.
- Tier 2 — Better than mainstream: sol-gel ceramic, silicone, modern non-stick alternatives with verified PFAS-free status.
- Tier 3 — Mainstream with caveats: PTFE-based non-stick, coated cookware with limited third-party transparency.
The current TerraBond HexClad line: Tier 2, with a flag.
TerraBond ceramic is structurally in the Tier 2 category. It claims PTFE-free and PFAS-free status, and the one available third-party-adjacent test (Cook Culture/Light Labs) found no PFAS. But the lack of published independent testing — paired with HexClad’s documented history of making PFAS-free claims that did not hold up — earns this a flag. The coating does not get the full Tier 2 confidence score until HexClad posts independently commissioned SDS data or third-party lab results.
Legacy HexClad (pre-2024 PTFE pans): Tier 3.
If you have older HexClad pans and cannot confirm they are TerraBond models, treat them as Tier 3. They contain PTFE. That is not automatically dangerous at normal cooking temperatures, but the brand’s non-toxic marketing for those pans was the basis of a $2.5 million settlement. So: Tier 3, and worth replacing if the coating is showing wear.
The Verdict: Is HexClad Non-Toxic?
The honest answer is: it depends on which pans and when you bought them.
The current TerraBond line is the cleanest cookware HexClad has ever made. The ceramic coating replaces PTFE. One manufacturer-paid test found no PFAS. Is HexClad non-toxic in its current form? Probably yes — but you cannot fully verify that yet, because HexClad has not published the independent testing needed to confirm the claim they’re making. Is HexClad the safest cookware you can buy? No. Bare stainless steel and cast iron don’t have coating chemistry to audit at all. For a Tier 1 alternative, cast iron from Lodge or bare stainless from All-Clad has no coating ambiguity.
And the durability question is separate from the toxicity question — but they connect. A non-stick coating that degrades within a year means more potential ingestion of whatever’s in the coating. HexClad has not solved that problem yet, regardless of what the coating is made of.

Is the new TerraBond ceramic coating safe?
TerraBond is a sol-gel ceramic nonstick, which is structurally a safer class of coating than PTFE — no fluoropolymers, stable at cooking temperatures.
